Role overview

What you'd be doing

We have a handful of original game concepts that we want developed into self-publishable short fiction. We're looking for an experienced fiction writer, ideally with a games or narrative-design background, who can take each concept from premise to finished, polished story.

Scope of work

What we'll ask of you

  • Develop each initial game concept into a clear short-story outline covering premise, plot, key characters, and emotional arc.
  • Create a chapter-by-chapter map that breaks the story into readable beats and explains what happens in each section.
  • Write the full manuscript to a self-publishable standard, including revisions based on agreed feedback.
  • Work from a concept rather than a fully specified brief, asking good questions and shaping the story with confidence.
  • Where useful, suggest how the story's hook, characters, or world could connect back to gameplay without turning the prose into design documentation.
Requirements

What we're hoping you bring

  • Demonstrable experience writing fiction, with samples published or otherwise.
  • Strong grasp of story structure, including premise, plot, character arcs, pacing, and satisfying endings.
  • Comfort writing polished short fiction in the rough range of 5,000–20,000 words per idea, adjustable by project.
  • Ability to collaborate through milestones: approved outline, chapter breakdown, full draft, and revision pass.
  • Reliable communication and realistic scheduling for asynchronous remote work.
  • Bonus: Background in game writing, narrative design, interactive fiction, tabletop RPGs, or another game-adjacent storytelling discipline.
  • Bonus: A genuine appreciation for games as a medium and an instinct for what makes a premise feel playable as well as readable.
What you'll gain

What we offer in return

  • Paid project work turning original game ideas into complete, self-publishable stories
  • Creative room to shape premises, characters, and worlds rather than simply filling in a rigid brief
  • Potential for ongoing collaboration across multiple short-fiction projects
How to apply

Send us a short note, that's it.

Email smks_studios (AT) proton DOT me with the items below. We care more about the samples and how you think about story than a formal CV.

  • One

One or two fiction writing samples, as links or attachments

  • Two

A short note on your relevant experience, including any games work

  • Three

Your rate structure and rough availability

  • Optional

Pick any well-known game and describe, in two or three sentences, the story you'd build around it

We'll usually follow up with a short, informal call to discuss your samples, the first concept, milestones, rights, and what a comfortable project scope looks like.
